I love to mess with computers... At one point in time, I was using 5 computers in my 'computing center' :-) not counting the other machines in other rooms. This was pretty messy looking, and my wife was not enjoying this much. After a few weeks, she told me I had to clean up the place. In addition to that, our first baby was on the way, and I had to find a permanent solution so that my computers and the related cabling would not be a danger for the little one.
Having a professional computer cabinet was not an option. They are not designed to have a place in a home, they are very heavy, and extremelly expensive. In addition to that, my computers were mostly desktop and tower PCs, not designed to fit in a 19" enclosure. I spent a few days looking for used computers racks on eBay, and computer surplus online stores, but nothing was at my wife's tastes, and the shipping cost for small old racks was way too expensive anyway.
The next step in my quest for the ideal computer cabinet was to go at the local tech stores, CompUSA, Circuit City, Best Buy, etc. I of course did not find anything matching my needs, but seeing some big Hifi cabinets at Best Buy gave me the idea to look in this direction. I went back home and started looking at online Hifi web store for the ideal cabinet that would have the right width and depth for my computers...
After extensive searches, only a very few Hifi cabinets were candidates for my computer center needs. Most of them were too small (especially not deep enougth), or were wide opened, which I did not want. I was looking for a cabinet with a glass door in front to cut the noise from the machine. And, I did not want to spend more than $250. Some very nice Hifi cabinets would have been great, but their price tag was way above my budget. In fact, the only cabinet manufacturer matching all my criterias was Tech Craft, a Canadian manufacturer of cabinets for Audio/Video equipments. The model I selected was from their Scuplture line, model SF50. You can read all the details about SF50 and SF60 here.
The last step was to find a good online store with this item in stock. I selected Hifi.com as they are a well known online retailer, and had the best price for this product, $199 shipped free. They usually have promotional codes, and/or free shipping. If you use the coupon code hifi10, you will get 10% off any order $200 or greater. You can easily find on their web site a blank MiniDisk for less than $4, or another small item to make your cart reach the $200.
